ERO is located at the headwaters of the peaceful Estero River. The spring-fed, tidal river meanders westward from US41 (Tamiami Trail) in Estero. Numerous twists and turns through rustic tropical surroundings make the 4.5 mile paddle to Estero Bay a worthwhile one. There are many sightings of osprey, great blue herons, curlews, hawks, spoonbills, eagles, manatees, otters, and other wildlife plus varied vegetation, all which thrive in this brackish water environment. A short distance from the river mouth, one can visit famous Mound Key, the ancient capitol of the Calusa Incdian Nation. Mound Key is an Indian shell mound, highest point in Estero Bay -- 33 feet above sea level -- with hiking trails and far reaching views. Paddling east from ERO along approximately 1 mile of freshing water, paddlers can see very different flaura, fauna, and terrain. Call or write for information about the river, canoe and kayak rentals, float trips, Everglades trips, moonlight paddles, and other events.
